Going For Gold - London 2012
The Olympics and Paralympics are rapidly approaching. Things do appear to be hotting up as London prepares for a barrage of athletes, media crews and visitors. I am delighted to see so many materials already provided for schools with numerous cross-curricular links between Music, English, PE, Art, Science, Maths and ICT etc. This will be a year to remember and it is right that we should pull out all of the stops to celebrate this magnificent occasion and its diversity. We should shout about all of the pomp and greatness that comes with such an historic event. London is almost ready and will welcome every competitor and follower with open arms no doubt. Going For Gold is a song specifically written for London 2012. I wrote it immediately after the announcement having done some research on previous host cities and what is means to be an athlete. I discovered that really, the ultimate goal for all is to win a gold medal. The journey that so many athletes travel to either achieve or narrowly miss this achievement is often truly remarkable. I think we should spare a thought for the gruelling training programmes and whacky diets these competitors go through, not to mention the early mornings and being away from family and friends to train in ‘foreign’ environments. Try out Going For Gold with your children - it’s catchy and fun. Once you are familiar with the words, (they’re easy to pick up - honestly!) they’ll be giving you a free history lesson on most of the cities that have hosted The Olympics. With less than 6 months to go, the buzz is certainly very evident and things will surely increase as the weeks go by. Wait until the Jubilee celebrations have passed, then things really will be getting out of control. Our one aim is to ensure we back our teams and athletes and keep them all Going For Gold!
